Can I Have Too Many Links to My Website?

By

Many webmasters argue that it is not good to have too many links on a website. Well as we all know, exchanging or creating backlinks is the best way to improve traffic to your website but the point is which type of links do you want to create or exchange? And how many links can you really have on your website?

What’s the problem if I have too many links?

It’s no secret that Google certainly rank those websites higher that have quality anchor text and many quality back links but if you have too many links in the wrong places and over too short a period of time, then Google may regard your website as a spam site and disregard it when it comes to the search engine list results. You want to have many links that are inter-correlated within your website, but you don't want to cross the fine line and end up with too many.

Google reveals the details

According to Google’s patent specifications, Google may record the link date of link exchanges, the date of the discovery of the link and Google can record the anchor text as well. According to the patent, Google may record the total life span of a web link, the rate at which new web links are appearing and the rate at which they are disappearing as well.

What do you understand from that?

It means that Google does not want that a brand new website has too many web links. Google can tolerate the web links if they come from a highly authoritative site but links that have no value at all have little value to both you and Google. Google’s patent specifications show that it is good to have slow and steady growth of web links of your website, rather than having them made quickly and inconsistently. In order to remain valuable in the eyes of Google, the best way is to vary the anchor text to give your website more natural look. If your website has a bit of a “link explosion” then Google will consider your website to be spam.

How to build links to your website without getting penalized

You cannot rely on one shot solution during link building. If you build links far too quickly, especially without providing information in return, Google may even penalize your website. The best way to build links is gradually, and in various forms. For example, switch it up from forum links to blog links to article links to really maximize your potential.

Think carefully and try to exchange links with other sites slowly and constantly. Invest valuable time to build links to your website. Check carefully that the links that you are exchanging with your website should contain the same keywords that your site contains. Consider the link popularity tools as well. You should aim to build about 20 links a day; any more may get Google on your back, any less may not have much of a result.

Great hub, and you have some great information here. Always good to know about how many is too many links. I am lucky I have not fallen foul of the over-linking thing on my website. Organic linking is the way to go for linking. The more natural the better.

I really like the fact that you mentioned making the link text look "natural". I've read a number of arguments back and forth about the pros and cons of this. For now, I try to mix them up as much as possible.

Well written.

I too think it's not the matter of quantity but a matter of quality that can affect your ratings on search engines.
