Why Is My Website Not Showing On Google?

By

This is a very popular question asked mostly by those who are just starting out. Making a website is only half the work; you have to get people to visit it. But if your site isn’t showing up on Google, how do you do that? If you type in your website domain in Google’s search bar (example: www.yourdomain.com) and it is not showing up in the results page it means your site is not indexed and there are a few things you need to do in order for it to show up.

First of all you need to check if your content is in Flash. Flash makes it difficult to search, search engines don’t like it, and let’s be honest, neither does anyone else.

Afterwards, you need to make sure you’ve got the basics covered in the navigation bar. Do you have a “Home,” “About Us,” “Reciprocal Links,” and “Sitemap” page? All of these pages are important to have, but the most crucial one that you absolutely require to get your website showing up on Google is the sitemap page. A sitemap is a page which includes a list of all the pages on your website. It helps people visiting your website find their way around, and helps the search engine crawlers access all pages of your site so that all your content can be indexed. A sitemap is very easy to make on your own, and free sitemap generators are also found online.

After this point, it is very likely that your website has been indexed. It does however, take a few days to go through so don’t panic if it immediately doesn’t show up on Google. Just be patient; try typing it in Google’s search bar again in a few days.

The last thing you want to do (if it is still not showing up in a few days’ time), is go to Google’s webmaster tools and enter it to be indexed yourself. It is very important to have a sitemap at this point so Google can index all of your pages and not just the one you enter in.

Although getting indexed in Google is a great start, I would definitely recommend furthering your success by having your site indexed in other search engines also, especially Yahoo and Bing. After all, the more people that end up coming to your website, the better for you!
